Britannia Fan Ovens - Built-In or Free Standing Britannia Cookers
The heating element which produces the heat to maintain a cooking temperature in an oven is installed in the rear of a oven box in a circular form around the oven fan blade which distributes the hot air round the oven to produce an even cooking temperature over the whole of the oven with cooking times being reduced in a fan oven
All Britannia oven fan motors should turn all the while the oven is turned on, failure of the oven fan to turn at full speed will result in poor cooking results and can cause the element to fail
Power to the oven elements is controlled either mechanically by turning a temperture dial or thermostat contol or electronically by a timer control panel. When an oven fails to come on you should always first check the auto clock to ensure this is set correctly, needs to be on a manual setting for the oven to come on
Oven fan elements have a fairly high rate of failure and will often cause the electrical supply to trip or to blow a fuse, failure is also sometimes accompanied by a covering of white powder substance over the oven caused by a split in the metal covering of the element
Most elements are fitted from inside the oven compartment and can reached by removing the covering plate from back of the compartment, however some elements are retained to the rear of the oven by threaded studs from the element bracket and retained by nuts which means the element is only removable by access to the rear of the oven box
Ensure that when replacing an Britannia Oven Element that the fixings for the element are secure and tight, failure to secure the element can result in this touching the fan blade which make the oven very noisy but also can damage the element which can shorten its life, be also very careful if spraying the oven with an oven cleaner to make sure that this does not come into contact with the element, this will again damage the element surface which will reduce its life
Britannia Ovens - Built-In or Free Standing with conventional heating elements and Fan heating elements
These ovens use a base element which is fitted under bottom of the main oven box together with the outer ring of the the grill element to provide heat for conventional heating ovens,
Britannia oven base elements can only be accessed from the rear of the oven but the grill may in some cases be able to be changed from inside the the oven box by removal of screws from the fixing bracket, be aware that when extracting the element it will have connecting wires attached, other may have stud fixing which again will have to removed from the rear of the cooker.
Changing a Britannia element should only be undertaken by a qualified or competent person with the electric supply disconnected
